Friday, August 15, 2008

Where: Chautauqua Institution

How far: 21/2-hour drive to southwestern New York.

How much: Prices vary. Daily rates range from $9 to $34.50, with parking $6. Sunday admission with parking free until 1:30 p.m. Weekend, weekly and season passes also available.

Why: This National Historic Landmark, founded in 1874, is dedicated to renewal of body, mind and soul. But it isn't restricted to academic, arts and spiritual pursuits. It also attracts families with activities geared to younger members, including boating and biking. Just a few miles outside you'll find everything from jet ski rentals to Lucille Ball's birthplace in Jamestown, horseback riding to NASCAR racing and golfing to wine-tasting. Or piggyback a day trip to Niagara Falls.

Fun factor: Chautauqua has a schedule of continuous activities certain to include something for every visitor. Call it a "Relaxation Factor" of 10.
