Periodic street closures and traffic congestion will occur in Oakland Sunday and next week as students return to residence halls prior to the Aug. 25 start of classes at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.
On Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Carnegie Mellon campus, the 5100 block of Margaret Morrison Street, between Forbes Avenue and Tech Street, and the 100 block of Tech Street, between Margaret Morrison and Schenley Drive, will be closed to through-traffic as first-year students arrive for weeklong orientation.
Also, the 1000 block of Morewood Avenue, between Fifth and Forbes avenues, is expected to be very congested, so motorists may want to avoid that area if possible.
On the Pitt campus, Bigelow Boulevard between Forbes and Fifth avenues will close from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Aug. 22. The Port Authority's Route 54C buses will not serve either the Carnegie Museums stop on Forbes Avenue or the South Craig Street stop during the closures, according to Pitt.
Lothrop Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22.
University Place will close between Fifth Avenue and O'Hara Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Aug. 22. Campus police will be posted at University Drive to help with traffic. Those parking in the Soldiers & Sailors garage can exit onto University Place, but must turn right toward O'Hara.
University Drive B between Allequippa Street and University Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Aug. 22, with campus police to be posted at Allequippa and University Drive to deal with heavier than normal traffic.
Also, Tuesday through Aug. 23, parking on Ruskin Avenue will be limited to those moving into Ruskin Hall.
Schenley Quadrangle, normally accessible from Fifth Avenue, will be closed from tomorrow through Aug. 24.
Pitt also expects traffic to be heavier near campus Wednesday because of the freshman convocation, set for 3 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center. Campus police will assist with traffic flow at key intersections.
