The Pittsburgh Foundation distributed $13 million in grants and scholarships in the second quarter of this year, with a special focus on addressing youth violence.
Programs that address violence in the region -- especially among young black men -- received more than $500,000 in support. Much went to the job programs run by YouthWorks Inc., which is attempting to reach more than 1,400 youths over the year, a 12 percent increase from 2007. It is targeting youths in public housing and those leaving foster care.
Other anti-violence grants included funding for the city of Pittsburgh's summer job programs; United Way efforts to coordinate youth projects; the One Vision One Life initiative in McKeesport; and youth outreach programs by Communities in Action for Peace.
Overall, from April through June, the Pittsburgh Foundation distributed $6.5 million through its subsidiary foundations, $3.3 million in unrestricted funds, $2 million in grants worldwide and $1 million in scholarships. It has issued more than $20 million total this year.
Additionally, the community foundation approved:
$197,000 for Vintage Inc. senior center in East Liberty, which is implementing the Stanford University Disease Self-Management Program (a program addressing chronic diseases) for 200 seniors.
$120,000 to the Mattress Factory for its 2008-09 exhibition schedule, which includes a collaboration with the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University.
