Concert to benefit Pittsburgh Promise
Friday, August 08, 2008

An Aug. 23 concert and car cruise on the North Shore will benefit the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship fund while celebrating the city's 250th anniversary, officials announced today.

"It will be a family-friendly event," said Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, whose Director of Public Affairs David White was instrumental in getting the private sponsorships that will underwrite it. "We're calling it our Summer Celebration."

The event will start at noon in the block of Federal Street next to PNC Park. Classic car owners interested in displaying their vehicles should arrive between 10 a.m. and noon and should be prepared to pay a $5 entry fee.

The rhythm-and-blues-inflected musical card includes DJ Rookie Rick, Artistree, Jessica Lee & Co., Gary Belloma and the Blues Bombers, Hewlett Anderson Band, Johnny Angel and the Halos, and The Original Tymes, from Philadelphia.

"I'm looking for a great day and music from everyone," said Jack Hunt, also known as Johnny Angel, who is the musical organizer.

There will be a Kids Zone on Isabella Street.

The event is expected to cost $30,000, and all extra sponsor funds, plus the car cruise registration fees, will to to the Pittsburgh Promise, an effort to provide every eligible city school district graduate with enough money for college.

Sponsors are First National Bank, SpringHill Suites, Alcoa, Dollar Bank, Dagostino Electronic Services, Gallagher Benefit Services, Alco Parking, Comcast and Clear Channel Radio.
