Only one inbound lane will be open this weekend through the Parkway East/Interstate 376 construction zone from Business Route 22 in Wilkins to the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange.
The restriction will go into effect at 9 p.m. today, giving motorists plenty of time to get to Heinz Field for the Steelers' exhibition game and other events taking place in Pittsburgh.
The restriction is to be lifted no later than 5 a.m. Monday, although, depending on work progress, it could be sooner.
In addition to limiting the mainline of the parkway to a single lane through the three-mile construction zone, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's contractor will shut down or restrict a number of on- and off-ramps in the area. The closings are to be coordinated to avoid conflicting traffic on detour routes.
On-ramps to the parkway inbound to be closed periodically are from Greensburg Pike, Business Route 22, Route 8 (Wilkinsburg) and Route 30 (Forest Hills).
Off-ramps from the parkway inbound to be closed periodically are Ardmore Boulevard at Wilkinsburg and William Penn Highway at Churchill.
Detours will be posted at all of those points.
Weather permitting, this weekend's activity includes a considerable amount of paving, all covered under the $22.8 million construction contract.
PennDOT officials advised motorists traveling in the corridor to expect significant delays at times and to use alternate routes when possible.
