29 campaign offices for Obama opening statewide
Thursday, August 07, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign is holding official "grand opening" celebrations tonight at 29 field offices across the state with the help of some prominent Democratic officeholders, from U.S. Sen. Bob Casey to Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to state Auditor General Jack Wagner.

Locally, Mr. Wagner will speak at the opening of Mr. Obama's office, 205 Smithfield St., Downtown, along with County Council member Jim Burn and former city councilman Sala Udin. The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

"We are in the process of building a strong campaign organization, the size and scope of which this state has never seen before," said Mr. Obama's Pennsylvania State Director, Craig Schirmer, in a statement. "These 29 field offices are in every region of the state, including towns that have never seen a presidential campaign office before."

Campaign offices for John McCain have been up and running in Pennsylvania for the past month or so, said Paul Lindsay, a spokesman of the McCain campaign. The Green Tree headquarters, at 100 Fleet St., had its grand opening July 21, with speeches from Allegheny County Republican Chairman Jim Roddey and a dozen veterans.

Besides McCain offices in Harrisburg and Montgomery County, 11 additional "Victory '08" offices statewide, operated by the Republican National Committee and the state GOP, are working not only for Mr. McCain's election but for all Republican candidates for office in Pennsylvania.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
