Murrysville council last night approved a controversial zoning ordinance that will allow some residential property along main thoroughfares to be used for commercial development.
Dozens of citizens packed council chambers again to voice opposition to the General Business District Overlay ordinance. Opponents have argued for months that the ordinance will allow big box stores and generate additional crime and traffic.
The measure was approved in a 5-2 vote, with council members Dennis Pavlik and Joan Kearns voting no.
Council President Nancy Kacin and Vice President Larry Nicolette argued that the ordinance will bring more business to the community and help keep property taxes low.
Citizens booed and hissed after the vote and many left council chambers loudly vowing not to vote for the members who supported the overlay when they are up for re-election.
