Farmers Markets: 8/7/08, peaches and watermelons
Thursday, August 07, 2008

Visit the Farmers Market at Pine Community Park on the third Thursday of the month and you may leave with a few extra goodies. "The Third Thursday promotion is a way of thanking our market customers for their continued patronage," said market manager Kim Pierson. Last month the market handed out reusable produce bags stuffed with vendor coupons and samples. Next Thursday's event features a demonstration by Atria's Restaurants using local produce. That will likely be the final Third Thursday of this season.

Markets on Wheels reaches out to seniors

With new farmers markets popping up every year it's getting more and more convenient to buy local produce. But for some senior citizens, getting to these markets is a problem.

Thanks to the Farmers Market on Wheels program, sponsored by the Farmers Market Alliance and the American HealthCare Group, Western Pennsylvania seniors now have access to local produce.

"More and more communities want to have farmers markets, but there aren't enough hours in the day and days in the week for Western Pennsylvania farmers to travel to more markets. On the other hand, these farmers can grow more produce to meet the demand and the Farmers Market on Wheels takes their produce to market for them," said Art King, Farmers Market Alliance Vice President. The Farmers Market on Wheels program visits local senior centers and senior residences.

"There are 29 sites, mostly in Allegheny County. We hope to expand next year, including surrounding counties," said Erin Hart, Director of Business Development, Farmers Market on Wheels/American HealthCare Group. Shoppers also can talk with wellness providers at the markets.

The program runs from June to September. For information, including schedules, call 412-563-8800.

The peaches looked so juicy and fresh you couldn't resist. Later you realized you bought too many and you don't want them to go to waste, so what do you do? Here's an idea. The Farmers Market at Pine Community Park treats their customers to a recipe each week and this is one of them.

CHICKEN SALAD WITH PEACHES AND WALNUTS

PG TESTED

  • 2 large ripe peaches
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup (about) poppy seed salad dressing
  • 6 cups mixed baby lettuce
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans), toasted
  • Crumbled gorgonzola cheese or goat cheese, optional

Cut one peach into 1/3-inch pieces; place in large bowl. Add chicken and onion. Toss with enough dressing to coat. Salt and pepper to taste. Chill 15 minutes to 2 hours.

Add lettuce and walnuts to chicken mixture and toss to coat, adding more dressing, if desired. Mound salad on large plate. Cut remaining peach into thin wedges. Garnish salad with peach wedges and cheese, if using and serve immediately. Makes about 4 servings.

Toasting nuts

Skillet: Cook nuts in an ungreased skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until golden brown.

Oven: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally.
