Marrow donor found
Thursday, August 07, 2008

North Huntingdon resident Brandon Lewis, 20, has received a lot of bad news for someone his age. But last week, he got a phone call that was all good.

His doctors at Hillman Cancer Center, next to UPMC Shadyside, said a match had been found for him on the National Marrow Donor Program's registry.

Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2005, during his senior year at Norwin High School, Mr. Lewis underwent a stem cell transplant, but had a relapse this spring. His doctors told him his only hope was to undergo a second transplant.

Mr. Lewis has lost his parents and maternal grandparents to cancer and shares a home with his sister, Brittney, 22.

He said he's received a lot of support from his family and neighbors, including Circleville Assistant Fire Chief Bill Sombo, who headed a community effort to repair Mr. Lewis' home.

And though he'll never know the identity or source of his match due to confidentiality laws, he's particularly grateful to the family of Morningside resident Gerard Antonucci, 67.

The Antonuccis sponsored a blood drive and stem cell testing event July 21 for Mr. Lewis. It was in memory of Mr. Antonucci's wife, Mary Frances, who died of acute myelogenous leukemia on June 20.

Although Mr. Lewis still has challenges ahead, including more tests and chemotherapy, he said he's more cheerful.

"I was overjoyed," he said of hearing about his match. "There were tears."
