Film Notes: Dynamic duo sings Bond theme song
Friday, August 01, 2008

Jack White from the White Stripes and Alicia Keys have recorded the theme song for the next James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."

White wrote and produced the song, called "Another Way to Die." It will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. The soundtrack will drop on Oct. 28, and the movie will arrive in theaters Nov. 7.

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond who, having been betrayed by his lover Versper Lynd in the previous film, fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate a man (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organization which blackmailed Vesper is more complex and dangerous than anyone imagined.

The 22nd Bond adventure will also star Olga Kurylenko and Mathieu Amalric and take 007 to Austria, Italy and South America.

Details on Shia

Details magazine had the foresight -- or luck -- to put actor Shia LaBeouf on its September cover, which goes on sale Aug. 12.

In light of LaBeouf's recent traffic accident (he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving), it's an interesting read. "I don't ever remember getting arrested sober. It's when I'm drinking that I don't have the wherewithal to be able to realize the position of my life. There's too much at stake for me to throw it away," he says.

LaBeouf, who appeared in the latest Indiana Jones movie along with "Transformers" and "Disturbia," also talks about how he grew up poor in Echo Park. "My uncle was going to adopt me at one point because my parents couldn't afford to have me anymore. They had too much pride to go on welfare or food stamps."

You can find much more about LaBeouf, his family and how others assess his talent in the magazine.

'Burn' catches fire

"Burn," a script by Crafton's Greg Rempel, has made the quarterfinal cut in the Scriptapalooza screenwriting contest. Rempel describes it as a character-based supernatural thriller.

The competition puts entries into the hands of more than 85 producers, managers and agents who decide what scripts move forward. Top prizes include cash, along with consideration by production companies and literary representatives. Semifinalists will be announced on Monday.

Two of the past Scriptapalooza winners had their scripts made into the Lifetime movies, "Queen Sized" starring Nikki Blonsky and "The Family Holiday" starring Dave Coulier. Rempel's homegrown detective drama, "The Murder," played during the 2002 Three Rivers Film Festival and was screened elsewhere. Info: www.scriptapalooza.com.

Calling all girls

The Junior League of Pittsburgh is looking for girls to serve as models during its 2008 American Girl Fashion Show in early November.

They must fit either a size 6x for Bitty Baby outfits or size 10 for historical and "Just Like You" fashions.

Girls (or their parents) should fill out an application at www.jlpgh.org and bring it to one of these locations: Tomorrow, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Carnegie Mellon University's Margaret Morrison Hall; Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Barnes & Noble, Waterfront; and Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Waterfront.

The fashion shows will be Nov. 1 and 2 at the Pittsburgh Field Club, Fox Chapel. Girls will be wearing clothes by American Girl, which has found a ready audience for its line of historical dolls Kaya, Felicity, Josefina, Addy, Samantha, Kit and Molly, related books and accessories, and carrying authentic American Girl dolls.

Roughly 120 to 130 girls will be needed for five shows. They will receive a T-shirt for their contribution. The fashion show will benefit the Felician Sisters' Mooncrest Children's Program, Kids in the Kitchen and other children's charities.
