Housing effort may slow population loss
Thursday, July 31, 2008

On Corey Avenue at Maple Street in Braddock, signs of revitalization abound.

On the south side of the street, a 90-year-old brick apartment building that was once windowless and crumbling looks as it did at its peak, boasting ornate brick detailing and large bay windows.

On the north side of the street, three freshly constructed townhomes sparkle among the block's older row houses.

About 50 community members gathered Monday with Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato in Braddock to celebrate the opening of the East-Braddock Housing Development, made up of the three townhomes, the apartment building and another apartment building in East Pittsburgh.

Officials also participated in a golden shovel groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on six houses on Parker Avenue near Braddock Library.

The houses are to be sold to low-income families at a price of $67,000 and are part of the second phase of the Braddock Field Housing Development, which has built and sold seven houses on Verona Street in Braddock.

The development is part of an effort to provide more good quality, affordable housing in Braddock, where public officials are trying to stop the slow attrition of people from the borough.

"Much of the housing stock in Braddock is less than adequate [and] has many health and safety issues," said Doug VanHaitsma, the real estate director for the Mon Valley Initiative.

Lifelong Braddock resident Tina Sanders worries that she will have to move out of her hometown when she leaves her house on Kirkpatrick Street, which she has difficulty maintaining.

Like others, she said Braddock has a lack of good, affordable housing, but she does not want to leave.

"I was born in Braddock Hospital," she said. "I don't want to leave."

Public officials said it's a slow but sure sign that Braddock is making a comeback, despite so many odds.
