Kevin Frenock loved hockey.
The 18-year-old had an affinity for dirt bikes and guitars as well, but nothing could touch his devotion to his favorite sport. He sat glued to the television for every Pittsburgh Penquins game during this season's playoff series.
So it was with a heavy heart that his family and his teammates in the Pleasant Hills Roller Hockey League got the news that he died in a car accident on the way home from a roller hockey game June 21.
Mr. Frenock, of Pleasant Hills, lost control of his car along Route 51 in Elizabeth, striking several parked cars and snapping a utility pole in half. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Jefferson Medical Center.
The 2007 Thomas Jefferson High School graduate had planned to begin attending California University of Pennsylvania in September to study computer science.
It's fitting that his friends and teammates have chosen to remember Mr. Frenock with a three-on-three memorial roller hockey tournament in his honor Saturday at the South Park roller hockey rink.
The tournament, which runs from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., will feature local hockey celebrities, concessions donated by local restaurants, a Chinese auction, raffles and prizes. So far, 80 players have agreed to participate.
The proceeds will be donated to the Mario Lemieux Foundation in Mr. Frenock's name.
