State reviews MySpace accounts of 200 sex offenders
Wednesday, July 30, 2008

State Attorney General Tom Corbett said today authorities are reviewing the records of nearly 200 registered sex offenders in the state who have opened accounts on the MySpace social networking Web site.

The records are being reviewed to determine whether any convicted sex offender in Pennsylvania has violated terms of release by using MySpace. Information about the identified sex offenders is being forward to state and local probation and parole offices to search for possible violations.

Records of the registered sex offenders were obtained from MySpace under an order issued in June by the Dauphin County Common Pleas Court.

"Social networking sites like MySpace are supposed to be safe places for teens and young adults to connect with friends, share their thoughts and meet new people," Mr. Corbett said in a statement. "Convicted sex offenders have no business in that kind of an environment."
