Running back Brian Westbrook and cornerback Lito Sheppard reported to Philadelphia training camp yesterday amid speculation that one or both might hold out due to a contract dispute.
Westbrook has said he wants a new contract and recently fired agent Fletcher Smith and replaced him with Todd France. "I just wanted to give my agent an opportunity to talk with team president Joe Banner and see if we can get something done," Westbrook said.
But Westbrook didn't commit to attending all of training camp at Lehigh University. "I'm here now," he said. "Hopefully for good, but it remains to be seen. I can't see the future. But hopefully things go well, and we get a deal done."
Westbrook's arrival was a bit of a surprise because he held out of camp for a week in 2005 and eventually received a five-year, $25 million extension that November. Now, he wants that deal redone.
"At the time I wasn't the top running back," Westbrook said. "I've improved since then, and now the quality of play is different, and that's why I'm seeking an adjustment in the contract."
Last year, Westbrook, 29, was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his six-year career. He set a franchise record with a league-leading 2,104 yards from scrimmage.
Lions
Caleb Campbell said he was upset when the Army told him he wouldn't be able to play for Detroit this season. "Oh yeah, I cried, because I wanted a shot," said Campbell, a seventh-round draft pick of the Lions. The West Point graduate initially was told by the Army he could enter the NFL draft this year. If he made the team, he was told, he would be allowed to play in Detroit and carry out his service as a recruiter in the area.
Campbell already had agreed to terms with the Lions and was ready to start training camp. But the Army on Wednesday officially informed Campbell, a second lieutenant, and the Lions that he would be required to serve at least two years on active duty before he could apply to be released. "I was initially shocked, but you know when duty calls," Campbell said. "I can't do much about it. I'm being optimistic about everything, taking it with a smile."
Raiders
Star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha officially signed his $9,765,000 franchise player tender offer and joined Oakland in time for their first training camp practice, while running back LaMont Jordan has been told to stay away from the team.
Jordan is scheduled to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season, but has no role with the Raiders after the team drafted Darren McFadden. The Raiders might be forced to release Jordan if they can't make a deal.
Packers
With Brett Favre's retirement up in the air, it goes without saying that Green Bay might have to put off retiring the three-time MVP's jersey. The Packers had scheduled a ceremony to retire Favre's jersey in conjunction with the Sept. 8 season opener against Minnesota at Lambeau Field.
But with Favre now considering playing again in 2008 and locked in a standoff with Packers management about his future in football, Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy acknowledged that the ceremony might have to be postponed. "We have not made a decision yet on whether to cancel it," Murphy said, after the Packers' annual shareholders meeting at Lambeau. "But we're coming up to a point where we're going to have to make a decision pretty quickly."
