Ex-cop in West Mifflin guilty of faking evidence
Thursday, July 24, 2008

Former West Mifflin police officer Noel G. Missig was found guilty on five of nine counts this morning after a jury deliberated for more than two days.

Mr. Missig was found guilty in Allegheny County Court of charges related to fabricating information about illegal poker machines and of kicking and choking a juvenile in police custody. All five guilty counts are second-degree misdemeanors.

The jury acquitted Mr. Missig of charges related to planting cocaine on a suspect. Jurors said afterwards they thought the commonwealth's case on those counts lacked evidence and was plagued by conflicting testimony.

As a result of the convictions, Mr. Missig will lose his police pension, and he faces a maximum of five to 10 years in jail.

The charges were the result of a joint state-federal investigation into misconduct by former West Mifflin police Chief Frank Diener. Mr. Diener has already been sentenced in state and federal court on separate charges.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
