College Football Notebook: Every Duquesne game on radio next 2 seasons
Thursday, July 24, 2008

The upgrade of Duquesne's football program continued yesterday when athletic director Greg Amodio announced that all games for the next two seasons will be broadcast on WPTT-1360 (AM).

The Dukes will return to the radio after a two-year hiatus and will continue to be on the Internet Red Zone Media, with Alex Panormios doing the play-by-play for the 13th consecutive season.

"This further enhances our commitment to our football program," Amodio said. "Having a presence on the radio is essential as we continue to expand our reach."

There's also a possibility that Duquesne's game against Robert Morris will be a part of the Northeast Conference television package.

Duquesne, which won or shared 11 conference championships in 14 seasons in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, will join the NEC this season and will offer athletic scholarships for the first time in the modern era. Rooney Field has undergone a major face-lift with an extensive renovation that includes construction of permanent grandstands, concession stands, rest rooms, additional cement seating on the visitor's side and a new Sportexe artificial surface.

Duquesne, with 13 starters returning from a 6-4 team, opens the season Sept. 6 at Bucknell and plays its home opener and first NEC game Sept. 20 against Saint Francis, Pa.

Seton Hill

Seton Hill University will become a full-fledged member of NCAA Division II in all its sports this fall and will be eligible to compete for West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Seton Hill was ineligible for national postseason championships and competed only in WVIAC individual sports the past two years as a provisional member of Division II after switching from NAIA. It was expected to take four years for Seton Hill to be granted Division II status.

Saint Vincent

Former Pitt quarterback Rod Rutherford has joined the coaching staff at Saint Vincent College. Rutherford, a standout at Perry, will coach defensive backs for head coach Bob Colbert. Rutherford most recently was the starting quarterback for the Erie River Rats in the American Indoor Association. He also led Hamburg to the NFL Europe title before the league was disbanded after last season.

LSU

Redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee, Harvard transfer Andrew Hatch and possibly freshman Jordan Jefferson will compete for the No. 1 quarterback job for defending national champion LSU this season. Only Hatch has taken a collegiate snap, completing one pass in a game two years ago before transferring. Coach Les Miles said yesterday consistency will be the key to the competition. Expected starter Ryan Perrilloux was suspended from spring drills, then dismissed from the team, leaving no proven heir to Matt Flynn.
