Contracts

Landau Building Co. was awarded contracts from West Virginia University for the renovations of Woodburn Hall classrooms and from Robert Morris University to renovate the dormitories at Washington Hall.

Union Switch & Signal Inc. was awarded two contracts for the extension of the existing Shanghai Line 2 heavy rail metro system. The first contract is for the Shanghai Line 2 East Extension project ("East Extension") which will extend the current system eastward by about 181\u20442 miles to provide service to Pudong International Airport. The second contract is for the Hongqiao Integrated Transportation Hinge Mating project ("West-West Extension"), a westward extension of about 5.4 miles that will link the present system with Hongqiao airport. US&S' contract values for the two projects are $17.63 million and $4.68 million, respectively.

Carl Walker Construction was awarded a $13.6 million contract to build a five-story, 1,000-car parking garage at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Washington, Pa. The 327,000-square-foot garage is a design/build assignment for CWC. It will incorporate a pre-stressed, precast concrete frame and cast-in-place deck surfaces. The new garage will join the casino at a shared column line, and will feature a firewall separating the two structures.CWC will be working closely with LP Ciminelli, of Buffalo, N.Y., the construction manager on the project. The garage is scheduled for completion in May of 2009.

Grants/loans

Community College of Allegheny County was awarded a $984,275 three-year grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration to launch RN Achievement, a program designed to aid in expanding recruitment, retention and cultural diversity efforts in its nursing programs. The grant will fund four key initiatives: generating early interest in nursing among high school students; reaching out to disadvantaged students through preparatory work as well as financial assistance; working to improve retention; and incorporating cultural diversity sensitivity training into the program.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is the recipient of a $5 million gift from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The grant provides support for the design and construction of Phipps' new "living building," the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, for education, research and administration.
