Inmate offers NASCAR mementos to have witness killed
Friday, July 18, 2008

A Bedford County jail inmate arranged to have his collection of NASCAR memorabilia given to a hit man to kill a witness against him in a drug case.

Now, the inmate has lost his prized collection and gained the potential for a lot more jail time.

Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins Jr. said in a news release that the inmate, Allen Bridges, 53, and his son, Jacob Bridges, 19, both of Everett, have been charged in connection with the case.

Mr. Higgins gave the following details of the case:

Allen Bridges was jailed on a drug dealing charge when the DA learned in April that the suspect offered a fellow inmate a large quantity of NASCAR items if the inmate could put him in touch with someone who could "feed (the witness) to the pigs" and make the witness "disappear forever."

In May, a detective posed as a hit man, and Mr. Bridges made arrangements to make a down payment through his son.

When the detective and the son met, Jacob Bridges specifically mentioned the witness's name.

After turning over a large trash bag of NASCAR memorabilia to the detective, "Jacob then made a cutting motion with his hand across his throat."

Allen Bridges "has lost not only his prized and extensive collection of NASCAR memorabilia, but will spend a substantial portion of his life behind bars, and sadly, has brought his son down with him," Mr. Higgins said in the statement.

Allen Bridges is now jailed on $500,000 bond; Jacob Bridges is held on $200,000.
