Marichal keynote speaker for Negro League All-Star Gala
Friday, July 18, 2008

Juan Marichal, a Hall of Fame pitcher with the San Francisco Giants, will be the keynote speaker at the Negro League All-Star Gala tomorrow at the Sen. John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center Sports Museum.

But the Dominican native best known for his sky-high leg kick missed out on one honor accorded three of his fellow honorees: hearing his name called during the Major League Baseball draft.

Last month, James Tillman, John "Mule" Miles and Mamie "Peanut" Johnson -- one of only three women to play in the Negro Leagues -- were "drafted" by the Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals.

The Special Negro Leagues Player Draft was created to honor surviving Negro League players and all of the others who never got the chance to play in the major leagues because they were black.

Ted Toles Sr., who played one season with the Pittsburgh Crawfords, and relatives of the late Walter "Buck" Leonard of the Homestead Grays also will be on hand for the gala, a fund-raiser for the Josh Gibson Foundation.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at the history center in the Strip District. For more information, call 412-771-6949 or go to www.joshgibson.org.
