HR ball sells for $172,500
Friday, July 18, 2008

An autographed baseball that Babe Ruth hit for the 712th home run of his career sold for $172,500 during All-Star Game festivities this week, according to Hunt Auctions of Exton, Pa.

The ball and accompanying documentation were put up for sale by Jim Englert, a police officer in Upper St. Clair. He inherited the ball from his great uncle, Emmett Cavanagh, who caught the ball May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field.

The home run was the first of three that Ruth hit that day, and they were the last three he hit in his career.

The winning bidder was not identified.

Englert, who attended the All-Star Game with his father at Yankee Stadium, said it was a "bittersweet" moment.

"We enjoyed going up there. The parade and the game were great," Englert said. "I was slightly disappointed it didn't go for a little more. And it was kind of heart-wrenching to walk away and know [the ball] didn't belong to me anymore. But like I said, it was a great experience."
