State-owned universities up tuition

Tuition is going up by 3.5 percent this fall across the state university system.

The new in-state undergraduate rate for the 2008-09 academic year was adopted this morning by the board of governors of the State System of Higher Education.

Meeting in Harrisburg, the board opted to boost the base yearly undergraduate rate from $5,177 to $5,358, an increase of $181 for students on the 14 university campuses that include California, Clarion, Edinboro, Indiana and Slippery Rock universities in Western Pennsylvania.

Last Friday, the University of Pittsburgh raised its base in-state rate on the main campus by 6 percent, to $12,832. The same day, Penn State University set upped its base rate at its main campus by 5.9 percent, to $13,014.
