North Carolina fugitive caught in West Mifflin
Wednesday, July 16, 2008

A fugitive wanted for escaping police custody in North Carolina was arrested this morning in West Mifflin.

Chavis Hargro, 29, was wanted after escaping from a Shelby, N.C., facility on June 9. Mr. Hargro was picked up after a federal indictment on drug charges was returned out of Asheville, N.C.

However, as he was being processed by local police at the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Center, Mr. Hargro, who was in handcuffs, ran out of the building.

After getting a tip from North Carolina, members of the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force set up surveillance at an apartment in the 500 block of B Street in West Mifflin this morning. Mr. Hargro was arrested at 7:45 a.m. without incident.

During the arrest, officers found two handguns, as well as marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.

Police are unsure what Mr. Hargro's connection to Western Pennsylvania might be.

It was not the first time he attempted to flee from custody.

In 2000, when he was in the processing area of the same facility, Mr. Hargro overpowered a local police officer and shot him. He was unable to get away, however.

His North Carolina prison records show that Mr. Hargro has served almost three years for second-degree kidnapping and is currently on probation for resisting an officer and drug charges.
