National Merit Scholars announced

More than 50 local members of the Class of 2008 have won National Merit Scholarships.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. began releasing names of winners in the spring, and finished doing so yesterday. Nationally, about 8,200 students received scholarships worth more than $36 million.

The following students will receive one-time $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Corp., with some of the award money underwritten by corporations.

Nationwide, 2,500 students receive such scholarships, of 15,000 eligible National Merit Finalists.

Allegheny County: Keri Hartman, Baldwin; Eva Gillis-Buck, Ellis; Ankur Goyal, Fox Chapel; Alexandra Wiley, Fox Chapel, sponsored by the UPS Foundation; Matthew Lipner, Gateway; Sophia Bender, Moon; Margo Smith, Mt. Lebanon; Clifford Kim, North Allegheny; Edward Wu, North Allegheny; Li Xu, North Allegheny; Kate O'Brien, North Hills; Katie Falloon, Shady Side Academy; Hannah Foster, Shady Side Academy; Jayant Parepally, Shady Side Academy, sponsored by the May Department Stores Co. Foundation; Varun Reddy, Shady Side Academy; Robert Tisherman, Shady Side Academy; Liyun Jin, Upper St. Clair; Christine Lee, Upper St. Clair.

Butler County: Christian Bruggeman, Butler Area.

Washington County: Allison Kipling, Peters.

Westmoreland County: Kristin Sandness, Franklin Regional.

Other award winners receive college-sponsored scholarships worth $500 to $2,000 annually for up for four years of study.

Other scholarship winners received awards from corporations, which can be four-year annual scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000 per year, or single-payment scholarships of $2,500 to $5,000.
