Garden notes: Local school on board for contest
Saturday, July 12, 2008

Would you skateboard on an oriental rug? A photograph of a teenager about to do just that might win a New Kensington school a $3,500 prize.

To celebrate its 80th anniversary in the rug business, Karastan is holding a photo contest for photography schools across the country. The company asked students to make a statement by conceptualizing and creating a series of photographs that showcase a Karastan rug in three environments: a home, a public place and an "American" setting.

For the American setting, students from Oakbridge Academy of Arts chose a skateboard park. Karastan, which will award $3,500 in each of the three categories, has posted the entries on the Web at karastan.com/rug_ged2.asp. Visitors can vote for the winners through Tuesday. Winners will be announced Aug. 15.
