Officials probe riot at Forest County juvenile facility
Friday, July 11, 2008

Public welfare officials are investigating a riot that broke out July 5 in the Abraxas 1 juvenile facility in Marienville, Forest County.

Four 18-year-old residents were arrested and charged with riot, institutional vandalism, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and corruption of minors for a disturbance that began the night of July 5 and lasted into the next day.

Arrested were Derek Barnes, Richard Gale and Rasheed Seward, all of Philadelphia, and Vernon High of Chester, Chester County.

The four are accused of injuring another resident and two staff members, requiring their hospitalization, as well as property damage. A third staff member was also assaulted but did not require hospitalization. None of the injuries were considered serious.

According to state police, at least three buildings were damaged. They say the accused vandalized windows, desks, chairs and other furniture, causing an estimated $5,000 damage.

The four have been arraigned and were remanded to Warren County Jail in lieu of $25,000 straight bail.

Law enforcement officials from four state police stations were called to the Abraxas facility to restore order. In February, 10 youths at the same Abraxas facility assaulted other residents and staff, causing injuries to eight people. State police charged several teens with riot and aggravated assault following that incident.
