Councilman opposes permit for strip club near Station Square
Thursday, July 10, 2008

A proposal to open a strip club on West Carson Street near Station Square is coming under attack from a city councilman.

Dan Deasy, who represents the West End, said yesterday he has concerns about access to the site and the impact such a club could have on a nearby facility for recovering alcoholics and drug users.

Having a strip club located within 100 yards or so "sends the wrong message," he said.

"I don't think it's an appropriate location," he said.

A company called Marquise Investments has submitted an application to the city for a conditional use permit to operate Marquise at 1635 West Carson St. The location is across from Gateway View Plaza and a short distance from Station Square.

A briefing before the planning commission had been scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed yesterday, zoning administrator Susan Tymoczko said.

As part of its plan, Marquise Investments is proposing to renovate 500 to 1,000 square feet of a 5,000-square-foot warehouse-like building.

Neither company officials nor their attorney could be reached for comment yesterday.

Brendan Schubert, a zoning code administrative officer, said the club appeared to meet the criteria for a conditional use permit, which restricts its placement near other adult entertainment businesses, hotels, gambling enterprises, libraries, schools and residences, among other establishments.

Mr. Deasy said that in addition to his concerns about the club's proximity to the facility for recovering drug and alcohol users, he was worried about parking and access.

"Carson Street has a lot of accidents as it is. I don't think it's a very good location, in my opinion," he said.

To get the go-ahead, Marquise Investments would need a recommendation from the planning commission and approval by City Council.

Dru Simeone, executive director of the West Pittsburgh Partnership, a community development corporation, said yesterday was the first she had heard of the proposal. She said she would bring it to her board's attention.
