Police recover car used in Monday fatal shooting
Tuesday, July 08, 2008

A silver PT Cruiser police say was the getaway car in the Monday killing of a 25-year-old Verona man has been recovered.

A passerby spotted the unoccupied car parked on McNary Boulevard in Wilkinsburg about 11:30 a.m., Allegheny County police Lt. Bill Palmer said. The vehicle was towed to the county police headquarters, where detectives are awaiting a warrant to search it for evidence, he said.

Detectives are still searching for two people who, police say, shot and killed Andrew Kane in a residential neighborhood in Monroeville's Garden City section, then sped off in the Cruiser.

One of the car's occupants fired at squad cars as police chased the Cruiser toward Penn Hills, with at least one bullet striking the hood of a police car.

Police chased the car into Penn Hills but lost sight of it. Witnesses told police the car drove down Laketon Road into Wilkinsburg.

Kane died at Forbes Regional Hospital an hour after he was shot about 4 a.m. Cause of death was a gunshot wound to the trunk, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office.
