One person was killed and four were injured yesterday in a two-car crash in East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County.

State police said the crash occurred at 4:23 p.m. when an eastbound car driven by a 17-year-old crossed the center line of Route 31 and struck a westbound car carrying five people head-on.

Police said Sarah Atkinson, 44, of Yukon, died after being transported to Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, where she was pronounced dead.

Police did not release the name of the 17 year old, who was not injured. Police said he told them he fell asleep while driving.

Toxicology tests are pending.

Ms. Atkinson was a passenger in a car driven by Kenneth Atkinson, 45, also of Yukon. He and three other passengers in the car, all from Yukon, were taken by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The investigation is continuing.
