Pirates Notebook: No fun in the sun on Capps' Florida 'vacation'
Sunday, July 06, 2008

MILWAUKEE -- Matt Capps has had a few days to reflect on his upcoming summer Florida "vacation" and has reached this conclusion.

"It stinks," the Pirates' closer said. "It's not a good feeling, but it is what it is."

Minor-league report
Saturday's games

INDIANAPOLIS (42-48) won at Louisville, 3-0. RHP Mike Thompson (1-1, 3.86), back after missing 2 1/2 months to a knee surgery, pitched five scoreless innings and allowed one hit. He struck out two, walked one and threw 32 of 48 pitches for strikes. RHP Evan Meek (4.85) pitched two scoreless innings of relief. 3B Neil Walker (.234) went 2 for 4. LF Andrew McCutchen (.282) went 2 for 5.

ALTOONA (37-49) beat Harrisburg, 3-2, in 10 innings. RHP Luis Munoz (1-2, 5.09) pitched five scoreless innings and allowed three hits. He struck out one, walked four. RF Brad Corley (.285) went 3 for 5, including the walkoff RBI single in the 10th. 1B Jason Delaney (.300) went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

LYNCHBURG (39-47) beat Frederick, 7-5. LHP Danny Moskos (7-4, 5.08) allowed three runs and five hits in two innings. He struck out three, walked one. SS Angel Gonzalez (.250) went 2 for 3 with a walk and two steals.

HICKORY (36-50) lost to Columbus, 12-0. RHP Duke Welker (1-6, 5.31) allowed seven runs and seven hits in five innings. RF Erik Huber (.260) went 2 for 4.

STATE COLLEGE (4-13) lost at Oneonta, 9-5. RHP Wilson Ortiz (0-1, 4.09) allowed two runs and four hits in three innings. LF Quincy Latimore (.255) went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and and RBI.

BRADENTON (7-6) was off.

What it is, is an eight-week stint on the disabled list -- give or take a couple of days -- because of bursitis in his right shoulder and some muscle rotation deficit in that area.

Capps learned of his condition after undergoing tests in Pittsburgh Wednesday while his teammates were in Cincinnati.

"I watched the ball game on Wednesday night on my living room couch and didn't like it," Capps said. "I didn't like it at all."

Capps rejoined his teammates here late Thursday, but his stay in the Miller Park clubhouse will be short. He's scheduled to leave today for Bradenton, Fla., where he'll begin his rehabilitation.

He'll do no baseball activity for the first two weeks -- just exercises and stretching. Then he'll be re-evaluated to judge the range of motion in his shoulder.

If all is well at that point, he'll begin a throwing program aimed at returning him to the mound for the Pirates by early September.

"I'm very relieved they don't think there's a need for surgery, but it's frustrating."

Teammates from way back

Doug Mientkiewicz, who played for the New York Yankees last season, was a teammate of Alex Rodriguez long before that.

The two played together on the football team at Westminster Christian High School in Miami.

Mientkiewicz was a tight end. A-Rod was the quarterback.

"I was good because of him," Mientkiewicz said. "I was his security blanket. If he threw it to me, I caught it."

How good a quarterback was Rodriguez?

"He could have gone to the University of Miami and probably started as a freshman," Mientkiewicz said. "We ran the same offense as the University of Miami did, so he was familiar with it."

Rodriguez also was a standout basketball player in high school.

"He was as close to the perfect athlete as there is in sports," Mientkiewicz said. "I mean, not only is he gifted athletically, but he also works harder than any person on earth at what he does."

Mientkiewicz had scholarship offers to play football at Northern Iowa and some smaller schools.

"I knew I was going to play baseball," he said. "I knew I wasn't the biggest guy -- and obviously not the fastest."

Altoona all-stars

Class AA Altoona has announced its 10th anniversary team as voted by fans.

That team includes infielders Josh Bonifay (2003-05), Brad Eldred (2004-05), Rob Mackowiak (1999-2000), Jose Bautista (2005) and Jack Wilson (2000), outfielders Chris Duffy (2003-04, 2008), Adam Hyzdu (1999-2000), Steve Pearce (2007) and Nate McLouth (2004), catcher J.R. House (2001-03) and pitchers Sean Burnett (2003), Zach Duke (2004), Tom Gorzelanny (2004-05), Ian Snell (2003-04) and Matt Capps (2005).

Duke battling ERA

Zach Duke, scheduled to start for the Pirates today, has allowed only 14 earned runs in 42 2/3 innings over his past seven starts. That has dropped his earned run average from 4.55 to 3.88.

Oswalt out for hip

Houston's Roy Oswalt will not start against the Pirates Tuesday night.

The right-hander flew from Atlanta to Houston yesterday to have his ailing left hip examined. It wasn't immediately known if Oswalt will have to go on the disabled list.

Brandon Backe likely will start in Oswalt's place against the Pirates.
