Buying Here: South Strabane
Saturday, July 05, 2008
Colonial-style homes are a common sight in Washington County. But one that evokes the sunny climes of Spain and Portugal? Not so much.

That's why the 6,000-square-foot stucco mansion at 100 Wilmont Ave. in South Strabane (MLS No. 700879) merits a closer look. Built in 1912, it features the low-pitched tile roof and red-tile accents associated with Spanish Revival architecture.

Adding to its curb appeal is a roofed terrace that wraps around two sides of the house; one section is open to the sky.

Its $729,900 asking price might appear high for the area, even with 7.36 acres. But it's actually a bargain. The property was listed in 2001 for $1.1 million. As the family's plans and market conditions have changed, however, the price has come down.

The property is being offered by Karen Marshall of Keller Williams Realty (www.kw.com; 412-831-3800, ext. 126).

The house has six bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths -- plenty of space for a large or extended family.

The living room, which is graced with 12-foot boxed-beam ceilings and a quarry tile floor, measures 38 by 21 feet while the formal dining room is 20 by 19 feet -- larger even than the master bedroom.

Other features include a library with rich mahogany woodwork, a grand foyer with triple-stepped windows, magnificent woodwork throughout and five fireplaces (three working).

There's also a new gourmet cherry kitchen with granite countertops and a seven-car detached garage.

The house last changed hands in December 1998, when it was sold for $760,000. Its 2008 market value is $64,805 (www.co.washington.pa.us/wcmtp/tri.asp). Over the past four years, eight properties have sold on Wilmont Avenue ranging in price from $45,000 in March 2004 to $310,000 in April 2007 (www.realstats.net).

South Strabane (www.southstrabane.com) is part of the Trinity Area School District (www.trinitypride.k12.pa.us).
