Continuing problems with phone lines in the West Mifflin area because of recent rainy weather are affecting the borough's police department.
Calls to 911 in West Mifflin are being routed to the Munhall emergency center, which is then dispatching the calls to West Mifflin police.
That procedure has been in place since about 5 p.m. A dispatcher in Munhall has said there have only been a few emergency calls from the borough since then.
Calls to West Mifflin's non-emergency number are also being forwarded to another emergency dispatch center.
A spokesman for Verizon said that technicians have isolated the problem and believe it will be resolved by late tonight or early tomorrow.
Four telephone cables sustained water damage earlier this week. Three of those have dried out, but the fourth must have a new section of cable spliced in. That work is ongoing, and phone service is gradually being restored.
The spokesman expects full service won't return until the weekend.
