CINCINNATI -- The Pirate bullpen pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to nail down the team's 9-5 victory against Cincinnati.
Without injured closer Matt Capps, manager John Russell used Denny Bautista, Sean Burnett, John Grabow and Tyler Yates to get 20 outs.
Xavier Nady hit two home runs and drove in three runs. Adam LaRoche drove in two runs. Jose Bautista's home run in the ninth inning provided insurance and deprived Yates of a chance for a save.
John Van Benschoten had another terrible major league start for the Pirates. The organization's No. 1 draft pick in 2001, who's had little trouble winning at Class AAA Indianapolis the past two seasons, was gone by the third inning tonight.
He threw only 45 pitches -- 30 for strikes -- and allowed five hits, including three home runs, and five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
In 16 big league starts, the right-hander is 1-10 with an 8.82 earned run average. In 67 1/3 innings, he's allowed 66 earned runs.
"I know for a fact it's frustrating for him,'' said Burnett, a close friend of Van Benschoten. "He just needs that one game where it clicks and I think he'll be the normal Johnny V.''
