Final vacancy filled on WVU board
Monday, June 30, 2008

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin today named former Oracle Corp. President Ray Lane to fill the final vacancy on West Virginia University's Board of Governors.

Mr. Lane, managing partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, joins former Massachusetts Institute of Technology President Charles M. Vest and professional soccer team executive Oliver Luck, who were nominated by Mr. Manchin last week. All three are WVU alumni.

The appointments come as the state's flagship institution recovers from an academic scandal involving Mr. Manchin's daughter, Mylan Inc. executive Heather Bresch. The scandal triggered the pending departure of WVU President Mike Garrison effective Sept. 1.

An investigative panel concluded in April that the university falsified records to award Ms. Bresch a master's of business administration degree that she did not earn. Ms. Bresch is a long-time friend of Mr. Garrison, who reported to her as a one-time lobbyist for Mylan. Milan Puskar, the Cecil-based generic drug maker's chairman, is WVU's biggest benefactor.

Mr. Lane, a Pittsburgh native, is a member of the Board of Trustees at Carnegie Mellon University. His "knowledge and skills reach well beyond his business and technology successes to encompass organizational development, team building and higher education advancement," Mr. Manchin said.

In 2000, Mr. Lane donated $5 million to what would become WVU's Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.
