Canadian wins Tour of Pennsylvania bike race
Sunday, June 29, 2008

Daniel Holloway won the rain-shortened cycling criterium through the streets of Downtown this evening, and Canadian David Veilleux was awarded the overall championship of the inaugural American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania.

The scheduled 33-lap, 50-mile criterium was reduced to 24 laps and suspended for about 20 minutes after six laps because of tornado warnings. When the racing resumed, less than half the original field of 82 cyclists competed over the slick roads that caused a number of crashes on the Grant Street bricks.

Veilleux won the 420-mile race from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh because he was the leader by 12 seconds after finishing first in Stage 5 from Latrobe to the South Side Saturday. Veilleux, 20, a native of Quebec, had an overall time of 14:43.24, followed by Christoff Van Heerden's 14:43.36 and Stefano Barberi's 14;43.42.
