Ex-quarterback Oliver Luck named to WVU board
Friday, June 27, 2008

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin today nominated former professional football player and soccer team executive Oliver Luck to fill one of two remaining vacancies on West Virginia University's Board of Governors.

Mr. Luck, a WVU alumnus and president and general manager of the Houston Dynamo, joins former Massachusetts Institute of Technology President Charles M. Vest, who Mr. Manchin nominated on Wednesday.

The appointments come as the state's flagship institution recovers from an academic scandal involving the governor's daughter, Mylan Inc. executive Heather Bresch. The scandal led to the resignation of three high-ranking administrators, including President Mike Garrison, who announced his intention to step down Sept. 1 after WVU's faculty twice voted for his resignation by landslide margins.

Mr. Garrison is a longtime friend of Ms. Bresch, to whom he reported as a one-time lobbyist for Mylan, a Cecil-based generic drug maker. Mylan Chairman Milan Puskar is WVU's biggest benefactor.

Mr. Luck is a member of WVU's Athletic Hall of Fame. He played five seasons for the Houston Oilers of the National Football League and served as chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, which built and managed three sports and entertainment venues in the Texas city.

"I am confident that he will be a true asset to the board as it works to continue to move WVU forward," Mr. Manchin said.
