Dollars and sense help forge Bloomquist's career
Friday, June 27, 2008

Scott Bloomquist from Mooresville, Tenn., is known for winning the big, high dollar, dirt late model events.

"Any race $30,000 to-win or bigger we really focus on," said Bloomquist, the winner of last year's inaugural $30,000 to-win Firecracker 100. It's easy to see why this year's $40,000 to-win Firecracker is on his radar.

"One good thing is [Lernerville] is very racey and the fast guys should be able to get to the front and win the race. We really enjoy going to tracks like that. To me, [the Firecracker] is as big as most all other races that are that size [100-laps], we really take them all by dollars and cents," said Bloomquist.

Last year, Bloomquist discovered it was more profitable to race in fewer events as long as the winner's share was at least $10,000.

"We see the potential this year to be as profitable or more by racing less. You still have to be able to win the bigger shows so you don't have to race as much," Bloomquist said.

Racing less doesn't seem to bother him.

"I've raced 26 years, I don't think I need any more practice," said the veteran late model driver.

Qualifying for the Firecracker 100 begins at 7:15 p.m. today with heat races and fireworks. Tomorrow, racing action begins at 7:30 p.m. with the B-main and the Uncle Sam 30 followed by the Firecracker 100.

Junior drag racers

Pittsburgh Raceway Park in New Alexandria has been chosen by the IHRA to host the first All Junior Dragster World Team Finals.

The weekend kicks off with qualifications and racing at 8 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

According to IHRA junior dragster director, Sherrie Barbour, PRP was chosen because of its involvement with the class. "They promote the junior [competitors] on a weekly basis and they have a great junior program along with promoting safety also," said Barbour.

The purpose of the All Junior Dragster World Team Finals is to pit junior dragster drivers in four age brackets, 8-9, 10-11, 12-14 and 15-17 up against competitors from eight IHRA and NHRA sanctioned tracks.
