No member of the Pirates is more familiar with the New York Yankees than utilityman Doug Mientkiewicz, having spent all of last season in the Bronx.
As a result, no one on the home side is better able to express his admiration for their status as Major League Baseball's marquee franchise.
"I have nothing but respect for them, from George Steinbrenner on down," Mientkiewicz said. "I loved every minute of my time there. It was an honor to play for the Yankees. The guys I got to play with were the best teammates on Earth. They taught me a lot about what it takes to be expected to win every single game you play."
And how will he feel when he sees the Yankees take batting practice at PNC Park today?
"I have a lot of friends over there, and I wish them well. Except for these three nights."
Mientkiewicz batted .277 in his lone season with the Yankees.
