Elsie Schaefer

Only 52 when she retired, Elsie Schaefer has found many activities to occupy her over the past 58 years. She turned 100 last Wednesday and still enjoys word searches, singing, bingo and reading. She has also been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Whitehall for many years.

The former Elsie Hesse was born in Pittsburgh on June 18, 1908. She married Harry Schaefer in June 1957, and they lived in Baldwin Borough. In 1960, she retired as assistant treasurer of Birmingham Fire Insurance Co. of Pennsylvania.

Last year, Mrs. Schaefer moved to Concordia Lutheran Ministries' assisted living facility in Winfield, Butler County. A birthday party was held in Concordia's Oertel Care Center library last Wednesday.

Hard-working college man

Earning a college degree is never easy. It's even harder when you become ill your freshman year and have to get a job to pay for your education, like Curtis Campbell of Bethel Park.

Mr. Campbell turned 100 years old Sunday and celebrated with nearly 70 friends and family members from as far away as Texas and Utah. He was born on June 22, 1908, in Shamokin, Northumberland County. He moved to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Technical Institute, now Carnegie Mellon University. He had to drop out as a freshman but managed to graduate in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in engineering.

On May 8, 1936, he married the former Virginia Harrison. They had three children: Mary Ann Beichner and Curtis Campbell Jr., both of Bethel Park, and John Campbell of San Antonio, Texas. The family lived in Blackridge and Mr. Campbell worked as a production engineer for U.S. Steel from 1938-70. After his "first" retirement, he worked several other jobs until his final retirement in 1982 as accountant for Smithfield United Methodist Church.

Mr. Campbell, whose wife died in 1997, was a longtime member of South Avenue Methodist Church in Wilkinsburg and volunteered for eight years at Children's Hospital. He has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

If you or a friend or a relative recently turned 100 or will soon do so, the Post-Gazette would like to hear from you. On an occasional basis, the Magazine will feature short stories on people marking their 100th year.
