Pirates honoring Clemente, family for Gold Glove
Wednesday, June 18, 2008

CHICAGO -- The Pirates will honor Roberto Clemente for being named to the Rawlings Gold Glove All-Time Team by presenting his family with the trophy before the Saturday home game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rawlings' fan vote, conducted and announced last season, determined that Clemente, a 12-time Gold Glove winner, was among the best nine defensive players in Major League Baseball history. The rest of the team was catcher Johnny Bench, first baseman Wes Parker, second baseman Joe Morgan, shortstop Ozzie Smith, third baseman Brooks Robinson, outfielders Willie Mays and Ken Griffey, Jr., and pitcher Greg Maddux.

Mike Thompson, Rawlings' senior vice president, will present the trophy to Clemente's wife, Vera, and their two sons, Roberto Jr. and Luis.

After the national anthem, Roberto Jr. will throw the ceremonial first pitch.

"The Pittsburgh Pirates are very proud of what Roberto Clemente has done for this organization on and off the field, and this award is just another indication of how his legacy continues to live on," team president Frank Coonelly said. "This honor recognizes what all Pirates fans have known for a long time, that Roberto Clemente was the greatest right fielder to ever play the game. Roberto was a champion and an unparalleled humanitarian."
