Officer, suspect injured in traffic collision after chase
Wednesday, June 18, 2008

A police officer and a suspect were injured early today when a police pursuit ended with a crash in Edgewood.

The incident began with a dispute at a Swissvale apartment around 2:17 a.m.

The suspect, Todd Anzaldi, 38, of Natrona Heights, fled the scene in his girlfriend's car, leading police on a chase that ended almost before it began, Swissvale police Chief Greg Geppert said.

The suspect had been evicted yesterday by his girlfriend from the apartment they shared.

At about 2:15 a.m., Mr. Anzaldi showed up at her door, and she called 911.

Before officers arrived, Mr. Anzaldi, using car keys his estranged girlfriend previously had given him, drove away in her vehicle, passing a Braddock Hills police cruiser as he turned onto Brinton Road toward Edgewood.

Mr. Anzaldi lost control of the vehicle on Maple Avenue and collided with several parked cars, causing his vehicle to spin and collide with an Edgewood police car that was on its way to the scene.

The injured Edgewood police officer was treated and released at UPMC Presbyterian.

The suspect, whom police believe had been drinking alcohol, also was taken to the hospital. His condition was not available this morning.

He is awaiting arraignment later today on charges that will include unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault on a police officer, and fleeing and eluding police.

Allegheny County police are investigating. More charges may be pending.
