The American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble best known for performing locally and internationally on a barge equipped with a stage, will go aground this summer. Conductor and founder Robert Boudreau is creating a land-based home for the wind ensemble in Pine. The Highcroft Learning and Performance Center will host a limited number of concerts this season on an amphitheater nestled among the trees of a working farm.
The first concert will include works by Richard Strauss, Joaquin Rodrigo and newer works and premieres. Schedule: 7:30 tonight and tomorrow; 7:30 p.m. June 25 and 26; 7:30 p.m. July 26; and 3 p.m. July 27. Young peoples' concerts at 10:30 a.m. June 25 and July 26. The Gateway Clipper Fleet, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer, is renaming four of its five boats.
Starting Friday, they'll be known as The Empress (the former Party Liner), Princess (formerly the Keystone Belle), Duchess (formerly the Liberty Belle) and Countess (formerly the Good Ship Lollipop). The flagship Majestic will keep its name.
In addition, all sightseeing cruises and Good Ship Lollipop -- make that Countess -- cruises will be buy one, get one free from Friday through July 3. Tickets: 412-355-7980.
