CHICAGO -- The Pirates today signed shortstops Jordy Mercer and Chase D'Arnaud, their third- and fourth-round draft picks, as well as 39th-round pitcher Albert Fagan.
Mercer was a three-time All-Big 12 Conference selection at Oklahoma State University and is coming off a junior year in which he batted .330 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs and 60 RBIs in 62 games. He also did some pitching and had 17 career saves, most in school history.
D'Arnaud was a first-team West Coast Conference selection this year after batting .314 with 11 home runs, 17 doubles and 50 RBIs as a junior.
Fagan, a right-hander, was named the Region 15 Junior College Pitcher of the Year in 2006 at Rockland Community College.
The Pirates have signed 24 of their 50 draft picks, including half of the top 10.
