'SNL' stars descend on 'Burgh
Saturday, June 14, 2008

"Live from Pittsburgh, it's Saturday Night!"

Not really, but it may seem that way.

Smithfield Street Productions has begun filming "Hollywood and Wine," a movie starring a number of former and current "Saturday Night Live" cast members, including Chris Kattan, Norm MacDonald, Horatio Sanz and David Spade.

Other stars include Chazz Palminteri, who arrived in Pittsburgh Tuesday; Jeremy London and Nicky Whelan, who are also here; and Vivica Fox and Pamela Anderson.

Shooting began June 2 in Green Tree, where Smithfield Street Productions is based, and at the Island Studios in McKees Rocks.

"Hollywood and Wine," the first project in a six-picture deal between Smithfield Street Productions and Beverly Hills-based Proud Mary Entertainment, was written by Kevin Farley, brother of late "SNL" great Chris Farley. Kevin Farley, who is co-directing the movie with Matt Berman, is also acting in the flick with another Farley brother, John.

The $5 million comedy is about a Hollywood chef and his girlfriend who get involved in a get-rich quick scheme.

"We're very excited about the opportunity to continue to do films here in Pittsburgh, " said Mike Dolan, executive producer of the film and a principal of Smithfield Street Productions. He's also part owner of Island Studios.

"We were very fortunate to have the Farley brothers and some of their old friends coming in to do this project at rates that are probably less than what the market would bear," Mr. Dolan said.

He's vetting the other five film projects, which will have lower and medium-size budgets. The determining factors for what projects they'll undertake, he said, are "what will work best for Pittsburgh and showing the beauty of the city as well as what will make financial sense."
