Jacque DeMatteo is leaving Shaler Area to become Hampton's new football coach. The move could open a door for Neil Gordon to be a head coach again.
DeMatteo, who had a 36-45 record in eight seasons at Shaler, has accepted the Hampton job and his hiring will become official Wednesday at a school board meeting. North Hills defensive coordinator Pat Carey was the top candidate for the Hampton job, but he pulled out of the running Friday.
A few months ago, DeMatteo hired Gordon as his offensive coordinator at Shaler. Gordon was fired as Penn Hills' head coach in February, even though he had 21 highly successful seasons at the school. With DeMatteo leaving and with the start of preseason practices only two months away, Gordon seems like the logical replacement at Shaler -- if he wants the job.
"I'm happy for Jacque. This just happened, so I haven't even thought about it," Gordon said.
Shaler athletic director Paul Holzshu said the school won't react to DeMatteo's departure until it's official next week.
"We'll have to wait and see how the cards are played out and then we'll act accordingly," Holzshu said.
Trinity senior linebacker Mike Yancich, a Penn State recruit, will not play in Saturday's Big 33 all-star football game because his right arm was injured trying to make a tackle in practice Monday. The 51st annual Big 33 matches Pennsylvania against Ohio at Hersheypark Stadium.
Yancich has a torn bicep muscle and a fractured elbow bone. Yancich said he probably won't need surgery but might not be cleared for football activity for four to eight weeks.
"I'd still play [in the Big 33] if I had to do it over again," he said. "The risk of injury comes with any sport you play."
