Thursday, June 12, 2008

Mars Area High School graduate Brad Mueller finished his collegiate career in outstanding fashion.

Mueller, who graduated from Boston College then enrolled at Slippery Rock University as a graduated student, finished third in the 100-meter dash finals at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, which took place last month at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Mueller set a school record with his time of 10.29 seconds.

Mueller, the reigning indoor 60-meter dash national champion, finished only 0.08 of a second behind national champion Dennis Boone of St. Augustine's (10.21). Kawayne Fisher of Lincoln finished second with a 10.26 time.

His time in the finals trimmed 0.18 of a second off his previous school-record time set May 3 at the Pennsvlvania State Athletic Conference Championships at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The third-place national finish earned Mueller his second U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American citation of the season.

Perry grad all-region choice

Perry Traditional Academy graduate Wes White Jr. was named to the Division III Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Mideast Region first team.

White, a sophomore second baseman at Waynesburg University, finished second in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a .432 batting average.

White led the PAC and ranked eighth in Division III with seven triples.

He also led Waynesburg with 60 hits, 39 runs scored, 21 stolen bases and a .604 slugging percentage.

From the leadoff spot in the order, White posted a pair of 15-game hitting streaks during the season and reached base safely in all 36 games played by the Yellow Jackets. White also finished with 17 multi-hit games, including six games with three-plus hits.

A Pittsburgh resident, he recorded a .975 fielding percentage on 162 chances while making the transition to second base after starting 35 games at shortstop last year.

White, who was also voted to the first team All-PAC, is the first Yellow Jackets player to earn ABCA all-region honors since former outfielder/pitcher Eric Holt accomplished the feat in 2003 and 2004.

Shaler grad is All-PAC

Shaler Area High School graduate Ray Mertz was also a first-team selection on the Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball all-star team.

Mertz, a senior catcher at Grove City College, had a .377 average for the Wolverines. He led the team with 12 doubles and was second with 39 runs batted in.

Mertz, a two-year starter, also had 18 runs scored and two home runs.

PSAC cites Squeglia brothers

Brothers Chris and Jon Squeglia were both named to the second team of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball all-star team.

Both are Shaler Area graduates.

Chris, a senior starting pitcher at Slippery Rock University. was The Rock's ace this spring and finished with a 5-3 record and 5.55 ERA.

He struck out 26 batters and walked 17 in 47 innings pitched.

John, a junior starter at California University of Pennsylvania, had a 4-1 record and a 5.36 ERA for the Vulcans.

He struck out 23 batters in 401/3 innings and had one complete game.

The highlight of the 2008 collegiate season for these brothers came in April when the two pitched opposite games in a California-Slippery Rock doubleheader, each taking the victory in the game they started.
