A Green Tree man who police said caused a spectacle and traffic jam yesterday was arraigned last night on charges that he raped a teenager.
Nathan A. Cole, 20, apparently tried to stave off his arrest yesterday by threatening to kill himself inside his apartment on Greentree Road.
He barricaded himself inside at about 1 p.m., leading police to shut down Parkway West and Greentree Road in Green Tree.
Mr. Cole eventually surrendered around 5 p.m.
Charges have yet to be filed in connection with the standoff.
Mr. Cole was arraigned last night on charges of rape, sexual assault and unlawful restraint in connection with an incident early yesterday involving a 17-year-old girl.
Investigators interviewed the girl yesterday at UPMC South Side after the alleged assault at Mr. Cole's residence.
The girl said Mr. Cole persuaded her at 2 a.m. to visit his apartment because he was depressed.
The girl said after more than two hours with him, he demanded that she have sex with him and threatened to kill himself if she refused, according to a police affidavit.
When the girl refused, she said he forced himself on her.
Police attempted to serve the arrest warrant yesterday when the suspect, armed with a gun, slammed the door.
Traffic was backed up outbound past the Banksville Interchange and inbound past the Carnegie exit almost reaching Rosslyn Farms.
Also, Greentree Road was closed between Mansfield Avenue and Pocono Drive.
Mr. Cole was being held in the Allegheny County Jail, pending a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. June 19 before District Judge Gary M. Zyra in Scott.
