Smith departs hospital board

Keith Smith has left the board of the West Penn Allegheny Health System, the region's second-largest medical provider. Mr. Smith filled in as interim chief executive officer after last summer's departure of CEO Jerry Fedele and up until the hiring of Dr. Christopher Olivia, who became CEO in March. A spokesman said Mr. Smith left the board "of his own volition." He first joined the board of Allegheny General Hospital in 1999.

Activists seek 84 Lumber input

An environmental activist group hopes to pressure Washington County building supply company 84 Lumber to weigh in on a debate over a dam construction project in Chile. International Rivers, of Berkeley, Calif., has targeted 50 companies in the wood sector, including hardware chain Home Depot and 84 Lumber. The group wants businesses to either ensure that no supplies come from vendors connected with companies in the dam project or to send letters asking that the project be reconsidered. An 84 Lumber spokesman said the company did not deal directly with the affected companies or insert itself into other companies' discussions with government bodies.

Another outage at Amazon.com

Amazon.com's Web site suffered sporadic outages yesterday, just days after unspecified system issues knocked the online retailer offline for more than two hours. Keynote Systems Inc., a California-based company that monitors Web site performance, said the latest troubles started shortly after 1 p.m. and lasted at least an hour. Keynote's automated probes were able to reach the main Amazon.com site as little as 30 percent of the time. Even when the monitors did reach the site, they faced delays, a Keystone official said.

Mitsubishi big with sports fans

Mitsubishi Electric, the Marshall-based subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate, has been tapped to provide a 17-screen scoreboard for Air Canada Centre, home to Toronto's professional hockey and basketball teams, the Maple Leafs and Raptors. The four largest screens in the LED display will measure 10 feet by 17 feet each. The display is slated to be installed by Aug. 1.

S&T Bancorp said it completed the purchase of IBT Bancorp in a stock and cash deal valued at about $171 million ... Mylan Inc. said it received Food and Drug Administration approval for zaleplon, the generic version of King Pharmaceuticals' Sonata capsules. The drug is used to treat insomnia.
