The Internet abounds with gloriously targeted "radio" stations, some free others not. I don't hear too many primarily because I am usually listening to new discs or downloads or music that is going to be performed in an upcoming concert.
But there is one that I really like and do find myself logging on to again and again.
It is The Glass Bead Game, created, produced and hosted by Anthony Princiotti. In between his work as conductor and professor at Dartmouth College and guest conducting elsewhere, he finds the time to weave together about 10-12 songs and pieces for this show that also airs on WOOL-FM at 100.1 FM on Saturdays at 10 p.m. and Wednesdays at 3 p.m.
Each program takes a theme through all of the songs, some pop and some classical. Some of the threads have been food, nostalgia, weather, words, numbers, politics, cars, irony, crime, identity and darkness. Yes, he gets pretty creative. I met Princiotti the other day and I could have sworn he told me he also likes to program so that each song's key is arranged like an uber bass line. He is just obsessed with music like that.
Actually, the best part about the shows is that they are not heady and intellectual (even though Princiotti is fond of speaking in a funny, faux-professorial speak abounding in pretension -- he is actually down to Earth). There are many guilty pleasures and even cheesy music mixed with the great selections. It's just fun listening. The one program you must hear is "Awful Music", which includes William Shatner singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Rappin' with Gas" by the National Gas Fuel Distribution Posse.
Gotta love it.
