Penguins assistant coach Andre Savard reportedly is a serious contender to fill the coaching vacancy in Florida, but the Panthers haven't requested permission to speak with him yet.
For his part, Savard said, "I don't know anything about it."
Meanwhile, the Penguins are expected to participate in a rookie tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, for the second consecutive year. The event would be held before training camp opens.

Maria Sharapova will not compete on grass before Wimbledon for the first time in her career, opting out of playing her usual warm-up tournament in England. Sharapova is hoping to avoid injury and will prepare in Florida rather than compete in the DFS Classic that starts tomorrow in London.
Andy Roddick will begin the defense of his Queen's Club title against fellow Americans Robby Ginepri or Vince Spadea in the Wimbledon warmup tournament. The top eight seeds, including No. 3 Roddick, No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, have first-round byes.

Katie Douglas scored 20 points and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 19 as the Indiana Fever beat the visiting Houston Comets (1-7), 84-75, in WNBA action. Tan White scored 15 points and Sherill Baker added 10 for Indiana (4-2). Tina Thompson led Houston with 19 points.

The Pittsburgh Passion ran their record to 7-0 last night with a 54-6 victory against the visiting Holyoke Hurricanes in the Independent Women's Football League game at Cupples Stadium. It was the Passion's final regular-season home game.
Cedric Benson's rocky relationship with the Chicago Bears got murkier yesterday after the running back's arrest on a drunken-driving charge in Austin, Texas, his second arrest in little more than a month. Bears officials said they would treat the matter seriously. Benson's attorney said the former Texas star had a few drinks with dinner but didn't think he was intoxicated and cooperated with police.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says he is slow and can't jump because of lingering effects of an ankle injury late last season. Brady, speaking on the second day of the team's three-day minicamp, said that his offseason training program has been limited by the fact that he still cannot lift a lot of weight.
Chris Greisen threw seven touchdown passes to help the visiting Georgia Force (9-5) beat the Columbus Destroyers (3-11), 63-34, in the Arena Football League. Greisen was 18 of 26 for 270 yards. ... Raymond Philyaw threw five touchdowns passes to lead the Cleveland Gladiators (8-6) to a 65-44 victory against the Chicago Rush (10-4). Philyaw was 14 of 19 for 222 yards.
Hockey
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Penguins defeated visiting Chicago, 5-1, in the Calder Cup finals. The Baby Penguins trail Chicago. 3-2, in the best-of-seven series.
Riverhounds
The Riverhounds fell to 0-6-3 with a 5-3 loss at Wilmington, N.C. The Hammerheads scored on two penalty kicks in the first half. Thabiso Khumalo scored twice for Pittsburgh, which plays Tuesday in Chicago against the AAC Eagles in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
