Sunday, June 08, 2008

The California University of Pennsylvania track and field team had five individuals earn All-American status at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which were conducted at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., May 22-24.

Danielle Malay, a senior from Bethel Park, placed fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:01.06. One week earlier, Malay placed second at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference meet with a time of 1.01.07.

The other four Vulcans medal winners were members of the men's 4 x 400 relay team, which earned its second All-America honor of the year. The team, composed of senior Brad Rager (Truman), sophomore Frank Ehrensberger (Elk County Catholic), freshman Timmie Patrick and freshman C.J. Baker (Washington), placed sixth with a time of 3:12.01, which also broke their school record.

Patrick was replacing Dadre Williams (Penn Hills), who helped the Vulcans claim their first All-American honor during the indoor season.

Waynesburg javelin thrower cited

Waynesburg University freshman Elisha Jones earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, May 22-24.

Jones finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 138.52 feet in the finals, breaking her previous school record set one weekend earlier. She qualified for the finals after finishing fourth in her preliminary flight and fifth overall with a mark of 136.84 feet (41.71 meters).

Junior Ashley Dodd (Upper St. Clair) fell short of All-American status after placing 10th overall in the pole vault for the Yellow Jackets. Dodd posted a clearance of 11.88 feet (3.62 meters) in the field of 17 athletes.

Dodd has competed in three NCAA championships since joining the program last season. She is the first track & field athlete in school history (male or female) to make multiple appearances at the NCAA championships. Dodd was an All-American during the indoor season.

W&J discus thrower honored

Doug Melton became the first male athlete from Washington & Jefferson College to earn All-America status at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, May 22-24.

Melton, a senior from Cleveland, Ohio, placed eighth in the discus event with a career-long throw of 49.59 meters (162'8"). The discus field featured 16 competitors.

"I am so happy for Doug, because he has worked so hard," said W&J coach Mark FitzPatrick. "He's really excited. I'm excited Doug gets to end his career as an All-American."

Melton was one of nine qualifiers to advance to the finals after posting a mark of 49.49 meters (162'4") in the preliminary round.

Melton then topped that mark in his final of six throws during the championship round to earn the All-America honor.

Melton also played defensive back for the W&J football team.
